Hot rods are typically old American cars from the pre-World War II era. Model A Fords & 1932-34 Fords are usually the most commonly used. However most cars from any American manufactuer are prime candidates for building a hot rod. Traditionally powered by a small block V8 from a Chevy being the most popular. However Ford and Dodge are used as well. Flathead Fords V8s are also a hot rodder's delight. Hot rods often have body parts removed, reducing the body weight and increasing the horsepower to weight ratio.
Hot rods first appeared in Southern California in the late 1930s. They were often raced on dry lake beds in the Southern California area.
The car in my illustration is a early 1930's Ford 3 window coupe, powered by a late model Ford small block v8. The environment is a dry lake bed. My illustration is influenced by my love of American hot rods and all those hot rod magazines I used to read and collect as a youth and teenager in the late 1960's and early 1970's.....
Ken has been interested in art since an early age (born in mid 1950s) and one of the first things he drew before the age of five was images of cars. Automobiles, mostly the American classics and hot rods are Ken's passion. In 1983 he restored a 1960 Corvette which he still owns and drives in the summer. Ken has been employed in the IT industry since the 1980s where he became exposed to digital art. He is a self taught digital photographer and digital artist using tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, Corel Painter and Artrage as well as 3D modeling and rendering apps like Hexagon, Vue Complete, 3DCoat, DAZ Studio, Groboto3D, Silo3D & 3D Coat. In some of Ken's digital illustrations he will combine hand drawings with digital photo elements...
